Champion Racing Driver Bobby Thompson continues to reach new heights in 2018 as he steps up to the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, the UK’s premier motorsport series with continued support from his 2017 headline sponsor, GKR Scaffolding Ltd.
The 21 year-old driver from Hornchurch in Essex won the 2017 Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup Championship with support from GKR Scaffolding and the firm, which won ‘Best Place to Work’ (Contractor) for 2018 in the ‘Construction Investing in Talent Awards, will continue to provide Thompson with the support he requires to secure his future in the highest echelon of British motor racing.
“We enjoyed supporting Bobby last season and watching him become the VW Cup Champion,” announced Neil Rowswell, Managing Director of GKR Scaffolding. “We wanted to continue supporting Bobby on his journey as his motorsport career progresses. Like GKR, he is incredibly focused and competitive, and invests in his own development and fitness to get to the top. We are looking forward to being part of his team again this year.”
Beginning his career at the age of eight in Cadet Karting, Thompson’s rise up the motorsport ladder to the top rung in 2018 will allow him to show the entire Motorsport nation how his own dedication and work ethic has paid off when he takes the wheel of his distinctive #19 Team HARD VW Passat BTCC car, which will be sporting the GKR Scaffolding logo and their ‘Better Future’ branding.
‘Better Future’ is an initiative of constant improvement that GKR launched earlier in 2017 focusing on their passion for people, innovation and community. Through those combined efforts, Bobby and the GKR employees have helped to sow the seeds of a ‘better future’ in those areas.
“I am thrilled that GKR Scaffolding have continued to support me in 2018,” says Thompson, who is one of the most popular drivers in the motorsport paddock. “To race in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship has been my dream since I began Kart Racing.
“With the continued support from GKR Scaffolding and their ‘Better Future’ programme they have helped me turn this dream into a reality. But our journey together isn’t going to stand still now that I have achieved this goal. From the moment I signed my deal with Team HARD I have set new, higher goals and I’ll be driving to the best of my ability to get on to the podium and win the Jack Sears trophy, a prize given to the best placed driver in each of the 30 races who has never finished on a BTCC podium prior to the start of the 2018 season.”
Bobby’s rivals on the circuit are the most talented and skilled touring car drivers in the UK today. In the same way GKR has seen their long term investment in their own people and communities within the construction industry result in success, Bobby has been able to do the same within the racing world through loyalty and long term dedication as he enters his third season with the highly successful Team HARD operation.
“As a team we’re very proud to welcome GKR Scaffolding to the BTCC operation and extend our relationship in to another season,” says team Principal Tony Gilham. “GKR have not only assisted Bobby in his debut year in the BTCC, but have also become title partners for the "GKR Better Future Scholarship" which is the biggest prize in British motorsport.
“It is a great pleasure to work with GKR. Team HARD isn’t simply a team, we are a family all working to give our drivers the best opportunity possible for them to be successful. Like the Team, GKR are extremely proactive when it comes to investing in the development of their own construction talent, allowing those individuals to become successful in their chosen career path. Our combined ethos has already been proven with Bobby's swift rise to the top and will continue over the coming years not only with Bobby but with the many driver who will benefit from the "GKR Better Future Scholarship"
