// Second year Kwik Fit MSA British Touring Car Championship star Bobby Thompson knew that the dauntingly quick 2.35-mile Thruxton circuit in Hampshire, would be a tough test.

Bobby Thompson admitted he is going to be in for a hard race day after qualifying 25th for race 10 of the 2019 BTCC season at the ultra fast Thruxton circuit.

With all four Team HARD VW CC’s struggling to keep pace with the rest of the 30-strong gird, the 22 year-old BTCC fan favourite and his #19 GKR Scaffolding with Autobrite Direct outfit wrung every ounce of speed out of their chassis, which made its BTCC debut as far back as 2013.

When track conditions were damp and greasy, as they were in the first of two practice sessions on Saturday morning, the 2017 VW Cup Series Champion took full advantage and spent more than half the session in the top three on the timesheets, but as the sun came out, Thompson was powerless to prevent his venerable machine from slipping down the order.

“We all knew that Thruxton would be our bogey track,” commented Thompson, who eventually qualified 25th in Saturday afternoon’s sole timed qualifying session. “Last year we couldn’t get the tyres to last and when we tested here earlier this year it was clear that the car just doesn’t work as well around here. All four of us (teammates Jack Goff, Carl Boardley and Michael Crees) have been trying different set ups all day but we seem to have reached the maximum performance we can here.

“I will be praying for rain tomorrow because that is our only realistic chance of getting up to the leaders and as we showed this morning, when it is wet out there we are right in the mix,” continued the driver known throughout the paddock as ‘Bobster.’  “But otherwise we will just have to keep pushing at 100 per cent every lap and be ready to pick up the pieces.”
