Bobby Thompson will be Celebrating the Sunny throughout his maiden British Touring Car Championship campaign in 2018 having signed a deal with Rio Soft Drink as his new presenting sponsor. 

The 21 year-old Hornchurch based driver’s Team HARD VW Passat will be even brighter than usual as Rio joins a growing list of official supporters and partners who will help guide the reigning Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup Champion through his rookie season in Britain’s Premier Motorsport Championship.


“We are very excited about our partnership with Bobby and helping BTCC fans Celebrate the Sunny with Rio, says a spokesperson for Rio, whose Brazilian street art inspired colours will feature prominently on Bobby’s familiar #19 machine as well as on Bobby’s clothing and the race day autograph sessions. “Rio would like to congratulate Bobby on his fantastic achievement in making it to the BTCC in 2018. We are very excited about our partnership and wish him a successful season.”


For Bobby, known throughout the paddock as The Bobster, the addition of Rio to his existing partners, is a major coup.


“I’m delighted that Rio have decided to come on board with us this year,” says Bobby, whose rookie BTCC season goal is to take the honours in the Jack Sears Trophy for drivers who have yet to finish on an outright BTCC podium. “I’ve been and continue to be incredibly fortunate when it comes to outside sponsorship as I wouldn’t be here today without them but I’ve never been able to go into any shop or garage and buy my sponsors product off the shelf. It just goes to show how successful the BTCC is at promoting its drivers and I’ll be making sure there is plenty of Celebrating the Sunny on their coverage of me this year.


“Rio very kindly gave us a whole pallet of Soft Drinks for us to give out at the Autosport International Show and the fans couldn’t get enough of it. We were trying to take publicity shots of my VW Cup car with cans on the roof but the fans kept on drinking them as quick as we were putting them out!!” 


Team HARD principal Tony Gilham is equally pleased at Rio’s decision to join ‘BT19’ this season. For the team in the BTCC paddock who likes to go HARD or go home, Rio’s presence in the teams hospitality suite at all ten race weekends of the 2018 season will make what is already one of touring cars most lively paddock haunts an even more vibrant place to enjoy the action.


“As a four car team that prides itself on hiring talent over personal wealth all our drivers have to work very hard like Bobby does to bring in outside sponsorship,” says Gilham. “Our job is to give those sponsors and their friends the best experience we can and we pride ourselves in our paddock hospitality. With Rio now having a presence with us it just makes the Team HARD hospitality experience even better for the people who allow our drivers to race.”


Bobby and Rio will begin to Celebrate the Sunny on April 7-8 at Brands Hatch, which like each one of the ten-weekend, 30 race Championship will be televised live on ITV4.
